What Kind of Auto Body Damage is Considered Minor?

If you’ve been in an auto accident, it’s easy to worry about the state of your vehicle. However, not every collision leads to major damage. In fact, many auto accidents lead to minor scrapes or scratches that are relatively easy fixes. Here’s how to tell the difference between minor and major damages to your vehicle.

Cosmetic Damage

If the damage to your vehicle is mostly cosmetic, there’s a good chance it will be considered minor damage. In order to be classified as cosmetic, the damage should have no impact on the functionality of your vehicle. Cosmetic issues can include scratches in the paint, dings on the outer body, scuffs from barriers, walls, or other items, dents on panels, and tire ‘road rash.’

Headlights and Taillights

Most headlight damage is not major. Unless one of your head or taillights has been completely shattered or destroyed, it’s usually considered a minor damage. Cracks, scratches, and scuffs all fall under this category. If the light no longer functions, it must be replaced as soon as possible, as you can be pulled over and given a ticket for a malfunctioning lamp.

Internal Damage

While many cases of internal damage necessitate major repairs, some examples may be minor. If the exterior of the radiator is damaged, for example, that is usually a simple fix. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to ask a repair technician. They will be able to evaluate the damage to your vehicle, let you know the extent of the repairs, and provide you with a service estimate.
