It’s important to have a roadside emergency kit in your car year-round. In the summer, you should add a few extra items to make sure you can handle the heat while you wait for a towing company or roadside assistance to arrive.
Visibility Equipment
Flares and reflective hazard triangles can protect you and your car if you get stranded by the side of the road in low light or at night. An LED flameless flare will make it easier to draw attention to yourself and prevent an accident.
Water & Snacks
Whether you have to wait in your car, walk for help, or sit at the side of the road, water and snacks are essential. Just a couple hours in the hot sun can dehydrate you to the point of illness and exhaustion. Make sure you have enough water in your car for each person to have a bottle an hour for at least five hours. Pack shelf-stable snacks that are high in protein and low in sodium and sugar.
Reflective Blanket
If you have to shelter outside your car, a reflective blanket can protect you from the sun and rain and help you draw attention to yourself.
Sun Protection
Pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and appropriate footwear for everyone in the car. Wearing flip flops or sandals on the way to the beach is fine, but if you end up having to walk a mile to a service station or stand on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck, you’ll want to have better shoes on.
Tools & Equipment
Make sure your toolkit contains an adjustable wrench, duct tape, screwdrivers, and pliers. You should also add a couple of high-powered LED flashlights, a portable phone charger, a battery-powered radio, jumper cables, and a gauge and tire sealant.
First Aid Kit
Find a car first aid kit or a small, portable kit that contains ointment, gauze, tape, bandages, tweezers, painkillers, and antihistamines.
