22 Nov Which Injuries Are Most Likely During a Car Accident?
The safety features in vehicles are quite advanced these days. However, humans are still very vulnerable in a serious accident, as the force of the impact can damage any part of the body. If you’ve recently been in a car accident, you may be dealing with any of the following injuries.
Whiplash
Whiplash most commonly occurs in rear end auto collisions. When another car strikes your car’s rear bumper, the impact forces your head and neck back and forth violently. The soft tissues in the neck, such as the ligaments, become stretched beyond their capacity. Whiplash can cause the following symptoms:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Loss of range of motion in the neck
- Tingling or numbness down the arms
- Tenderness or pain in the shoulders, upper back, and arms
Whiplash typically resolves within a few weeks, but in some people, it can turn into a chronic health problem.
Lacerations and Contusions
Bumps and bruises are common in any type of car accident. They are often the result of items inside the car becoming airborne during the impact and striking the passengers. The potential for injury-inflicting, airborne objects is why it’s a good idea to secure all loose items in your car.
Internal Injuries
Internal injuries can include damage to the organs, such as the spleen and liver, as well as internal bleeding of blood vessels. Punctured lungs, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and diaphragm rupture are other possibilities. Although seat belts save lives, sometimes the force of being thrown against the seat belt is enough to cause internal injuries. Air bags can cause these injuries too. Note that without these safety devices, car accidents can be far deadlier.
Head Injuries
When a car accident happens, a person’s head may strike the side window or steering wheel, causing head trauma. If your head strikes anything inside the car, you may need to be evaluated for a possible concussion.
