What You Need to Know About Car-Animal Collisions

Accidents involving animals may seem rare, but it is a lot more common than you would think. Car-animal collisions can cause damage to your vehicle, requiring repairs. National Auto Collision Centers wants to make sure you are prepared in case it ever happens to you, so keep reading.

Safety First

You may feel a bit of shock if you’ve hit an animal, but your priority should be your safety and the safety of any passengers in your car. Move your car to the side of the road, if you are able, and make sure to use your hazard lights.

Call the Police

Even if everyone in the car is okay, you will need to call the police to notify them of the accident. This will be important for your insurance claim, but also to have the animal removed from the roadway for the safety of other drivers.

Gather Information

While waiting for the police, take pictures of any damage to your vehicle, any injuries you or your passengers sustained, the animal, and your surroundings, including any signs identifying the location of the accident.

Keep Your Distance

Whatever you do, do not go near the animal. If it is still alive, it could be dangerous and attack you out of fear. Leave caring for the animal to animal control and the police.

Contact Your Insurance Agent

Report the incident to your insurance agent as soon as possible, providing any documentation and photos they require. Your insurance agent will be able to verify your policy and coverage for damages.
