No matter how safe your driving habits are, you cannot control how other drivers behave on the road. And, unfortunately, reckless driving, intoxicated driving, and distracted driving are all prevalent. To mitigate the risks that these dangerous drivers pose to you and others on the road, you might take the following steps when you see a careless or reckless driver.
Take Note of Their License Plate Number
As soon as you see a dangerous driver on the road, you should pull over so you can report the situation to police. Jot down the car’s license plate number, if you are able to get a good look at it. Otherwise, write down a brief description of the vehicle including the make, model, color, and any distinguishing features like bumper stickers. If you get a good look at the driver, write down a description of the driver as well. This information can all be helpful to the police as they pursue a dangerous driver.
Call 911
Once you take a moment to record any info you have about the dangerous driver, call 911 to report the incident. Take note of your location as well as the direction that the other car was headed. If the driver is apprehended for driving under the influence or other infractions that you witnessed, you may be called as a witness if that individual goes to trial for those offenses. No action can be taken without a direct witness of a given infraction.
Do Not Follow the Driver
You might think that staying on a dangerous driver’s tail will help the police catch up to them, but this can put you in a dangerous situation—especially if you are trying to call 911 while you are still driving. Simply reporting the incident with as much detail as possible is the best course of action you can take for your safety.
