Safe Driving Tips for Seniors

Safe Driving Tips for Seniors

While many seniors are safe and effective drivers, getting older does present some unique risks on the road for older adults. For example, as you get older, your vision and hearing may become impaired. When you’re behind the wheel, this might mean missing essential visual or auditory cues on the road. To avoid a potential accident, follow these simple safe driving tips for seniors.

Pay attention to your health and wellness.

Along with changes to your hearing and eyesight, you may notice reduced muscle and grip strength, slower reaction times, or cloudy thinking. These changes may be related to various health issues, or they may be side effects of medications you take to manage your health. To ensure that you’re safe on the road every time you drive, tune in to your body and avoid driving when you don’t feel your best.

Ensure your car is comfortable and adjusted to you.

No matter what kind of car you drive, it should be adjusted to your stature. Make sure you can easily reach the gas and brake pedals and that mirrors are adjusted so that you can see them without turning your head. If you purchase a new vehicle in your senior years, look for newer technologies that can make driving even easier, such as parking assist systems, impact risk notifications, and steering controls.

Avoid driving at night.

Seeing in low light becomes harder with age, so you might find that nighttime conditions aren’t suitable for driving. Stick to driving only during daylight hours, if possible. It’s also a good idea to avoid driving during morning and evening rush hours if you can avoid it.
