12 May How You Should React When Someone Hits Your Parked Car
You can be the safest driver possible and still wind up having your car damaged in an accident. How? It’s possible for other drivers to accidentally collide with your parked car. Whether it’s in a parking lot or on a street, someone hitting your parked car can be extremely stressful and upsetting. If you’re ever caught in this situation, here’s how to react and what you should do.
Call the Authorities to Report the Accident
As with any accident, the first thing you should do if someone hits your parked car is call the police. Reporting the accident is important for later, when you’ll have to contact your insurance company and get your rightful compensation. Having a record of the accident will also help if you decide to press charges.
Call the Driver
Hopefully, whoever hit your car left a note with their contact information. If so, call them right away to get their insurance company’s contact number and any other relevant information. If you are present when the driver hits your parked car, follow the same steps you would in a normal accident. If the person that hit your car did not leave a note or any way to contact them, get in touch with your insurance company to determine the best course of action.
Gather Evidence & Document Damage
Before you leave the scene, be sure to document any damage to your car. Walk around the entire vehicle and carefully inspect it for dings, scratches, or other forms of damage. If possible, use your phone to take pictures or record video, as this will be valuable evidence for your insurance company. Be sure to do this before you drive away – this helps prove that the damage happened because of another person and was not inflicted on your drive home.
