How Speed Increases the Risk of Auto Accidents

Everyone has been there: you’re running late for work, so you drive over the speed limit to make it to your job on time. While the urge is completely understandable given your busy schedule, it’s essential to follow proper speed limits. In addition to the financial consequences, speeding can spell disaster when it comes to auto-related accidents.

The Facts

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding has been a factor in at least one-third of all auto-related fatalities over the last two decades. Speeding was also involved in 26% of auto fatalities in 2019, killing nearly 10,000 people.

The Causes of Speeding

Drivers may choose to speed for a variety of reasons. Most drivers go over the speed limit in areas of high traffic congestion or when they are running late for an engagement, like work or an appointment. The NHTSA notes that most motorists don’t make a habit out of aggressive driving; however, there are more cars on the roads now than ever before, leading to a higher rate of aggressive driving tactics.

Safety and Speeding

Not only can speeding have an enormous impact on your safety, it can also endanger everyone else on the road. Speeding reduces driver control, increases the severity of a crash, and increases your fuel consumption. It also decreases the effectiveness of protective auto equipment, including air bags and seat belts.

How to Combat Speeding

If you are sharing the road with an aggressive driver, there are several steps you can take to mitigate their negative effects. If a motorist is tailgating your vehicle, it is usually best to move over or safely let them pass. If you notice a speeding car, give the vehicle plenty of space, as the driver is more likely to lose control and cause a serious accident.
