Basic Car Repairs That Are Easy to Handle Yourself

There are a few simple car repairs you can do at home with standard tools and very little experience. Take a look at our tips below, and remember that if your car is damaged and you don’t have the time, experience, or tools to handle doing a car repair correctly and safely, you should leave it to the professionals at an auto repair shop.

Jumpstarting the Battery

Put both vehicles in park or neutral and shut off the ignitions. Clip one of the red alligator clips onto the positive terminal of the dead battery in your car, and hook the other end to the other car’s battery. Then clip one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other car’s working battery, and clip the other end to an unpainted metal piece on your car that is not directly next to the battery. Start the engine of the car that works and let it run for a minute or two, and then start the engine of your own car and let it run for a minute or two to recharge.

Replacing Your Windshield Wipers

To remove the old wipers, lift the wiper arm up and away from the windshield and press a small tab on the arm near where it attaches to the peg at the windshield. Line up the new wiper blade with that peg and push it in until you hear a click.

Replacing a Broken Headlight or Taillight

Remove the screws connecting the headlight or tail light frame to the bracket. Then, disconnect the electrical connector and take out the broken or burnt out bulb. Replace it with a new one, and then plug the connector back in and rescrew the frame.
