Drive Safer with These Tire Maintenance Recommendations

Drive Safer with These Tire Maintenance Recommendations

One of the most significant things you can do to improve the safety of your vehicle while driving is to take care of your tires. Not only do older tires increase your chances of being stranded on the side of the road with a flat, but tires in poor condition can also boost your odds of experiencing an auto accident. Stay safer on the road with these tire maintenance recommendations.

Air Pressure

Both over and under inflation cause premature wear and tear on your tires. To avoid these issues, check the air pressure on your tires at least once per month, even if your vehicle has an internal pressure monitoring system. Be sure to check the pressure before you drive, as driving will increase the heat in the tires that skews the results. Don’t forget to check the pressure in your spare tire as well.

Tire Rotation

Because different parts of vehicles put different amounts of weight on the tires, it is important to rotate them regularly to ensure even wear and tear. This will extend the life of your tires and help you get the best performance from them. To find out how often to rotate your tires, check your owner’s manual. Depending on the age of your car, you will likely need to rotate them every 5,000 and 7,000 miles.

Alignment

If your tires are out alignment, you will notice that your car pulls to one side or is difficult to steer. Generally, you should get an alignment whenever you get new tires and also any time you notice your car is running rough or is pulling when you try to keep it going straight.
