08 Nov How a Front End Collision Can Damage Your Transmission
Your car’s transmission has an important job. As your car’s speed increases or decreases, the transmission shifts gears accordingly to make sure that the right amount of power is being distributed. Some cars do this automatically, while others have manual transmissions. Regardless of whether your car is manual or automatic, its transmission can indeed sustain damage in a front end collision.
Watch out for leaking fluid.
Leaking transmission fluid may be one of the first signs that something is wrong. If you notice a puddle of reddish liquid under your car, it means you have a problem with your transmission. You’ll need to get your car checked out right away, as not having enough transmission fluid will cause even more damage to the components.
Make a note of problems shifting.
Since the transmission controls the shifting of the gears, it makes sense that damage to the transmission can cause problems shifting. You might hear an unusual sound when increasing or decreasing the car’s speed, for instance. Or, if you press on the gas pedal, it may take a long time for the car to begin accelerating.
Know what to do if you notice these signs.
Any indicators of transmission problems should be checked out by a certified collision repair technician right away. The longer you wait to get your car evaluated, the worse the problem is likely to get. For example, if you have gear grinding, this is caused by metal rubbing on metal. If this is allowed to continue, it can cause significant damage to the car. It’s possible, for instance, that the metal-on-metal contact will shave off metal slivers. These metal slivers can fall into your coolant and be circulated through the vehicle, causing widespread issues with the car. Err on the side of caution and bring your vehicle in right away.
